Every society is based on a belief system. In fact, the way a particular individual
processes his/her thoughts is also based on a belief system. You believe in something and
you tend to relate everything with it. I'm a strong follower of religion. I believe in all
the mythological stories, no matter how imaginary and fictional they seem to anyone else.
If any event or happening has both scientific and religious explanation, I happen to give
more importance to the religious one. Recently due to a heavy flood in the Alaknanda river
and a cloudburst in the Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand caused many deaths and left more than 1
lakh people stranded in the hills of the state. Most destruction was caused in one
of the chaar-dhaams, Kedarnath, which is also one of the twelve "Jyotirlinga".
Many reasons are being speculated behind the havoc caused. One of them is since it is an eco-
sensitive zone, and essential care were not taken of the area. Also since it had already
been raining continuously for a few days, then necessary precautions could have saved a
lot of lives. I recently came across another reason which somehow seemed most justified to
me.
There is a very ancient temple of "Dhari Devi"(Shakti) located on the banks of Alaknanda
river.
It is believed that the idols in the temple are not to be covered by a roof and
should be under an open sky. There happens to be a strange connection between the shrines
of Kedarnath and Dhari Devi.
It is said that in 1882, an attempt was made to construct a roof on the top of
the Devi temple, and then also a havoc was caused in the Kedar valley.
A few years back it was decided to build a hydro power plant in the area and it was decided
to move the temple from there. And a day or two before the catastrophe took place,on the
night of 16th June, 2013, the idol
of Dhari Devi was moved from that place. The power plant, though was washed away in the
flood. The locals believe that this havoc is caused due to Lord Shiva's wrath resulted by
the happenings of the Dhari Devi temple.
I agree that we need to construct various structures to meet the needs of the constantly
changing society. We need to progress with time but in doing this should we neglect and
ignore our age old mythological beliefs?
